Motorola has unveiled the latest device in its smartphone portfolio by showing off the Moto E, which will cost just £89 when it arrives on the market.

Motorola also announced an update to its Moto G device by adding 4G and a microSD card slot, two criticisms V3 had of the device in our review last November.

The Motorola Moto E is aimed squarely at budget smartphone buyers as the firm looks to target those looking to buy a phone upfront rather than have to buy into expensive contracts.

Motorola senior vice president of software engineering Steve Horowitz said: “With the Moto X and Moto G, we put Motorola back on the map – we now have over 17 percent of the pre-paid market in the UK. Now we’re introducing the Moto E, a great smartphone with a price point for all.”

The Moto E features a 4.3in 960×540 resolution display, and arrives running Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat mobile operating system.

Typically, this comes skinned in Motorola’s custom user interface, although this is a very light skin adding little more on top of Google’s Android features. Thanks to this, Motorola boasted that it can “deliver updates quicker than anybody else in the industry”.

It does add some custom features though, such as a new one called Motorola Alerts. This allows users to let friends and family know when they have arrived at a specific location, for example, or to send a message in an emergency.

The Moto E has a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. It will also come with only 4GB of internal storage that’s expandable via microSD card and just one 5MP rear-facing camera. It also has a 1,980mAh battery that Motorola claims will last a full day.

Motorola also boasts that the handset is waterproof, making it one of the first affordable smartphones with this capability, while it also has an anti-smudge coating on its display.

The Moto E is likely to be available soon, although no set date was given, while the updated Moto G LTE will go on sale in the UK in the coming weeks, priced at £149 SIM-free.
