NFL Star Cam Newton Injured In Car Crash

NFL star Cam Newton has suffered fractures in his lower back in a car crash.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback, and former top overall draft pick, was involved in a two-car crash on Tuesday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The 25-year-old was in “fair condition” at Carolinas Medical Center, where he will remain overnight for observation, the team said in a statement.

Panthers spokesman Charlie Dayton told reporters that Newton’s injuries will not require surgery, and he is expected to be released from hospital on Wednesday.

The accident took place at about 12.30pm on a bridge over Interstate 277, which runs adjacent to the Panthers’ home stadium.

Pictures from the scene showed Newton’s heavily damaged truck with Bank of America Stadium visible in the background.

A witness told The Charlotte Observer newspaper that Newton’s truck flipped several times before coming to rest on its passenger side.

He described Newton as “alert” and “in pain”.

Photos published by the newspaper appeared to show Newton smiling as he was treated by first responders.

The driver of the second vehicle was also taken to hospital. Officials have not provided an update on his condition.

Police are investigating the crash.
