An airline employee has caused outrage after warning festival goers to flush their drugs down the toilet as sniffer dogs were waiting for them.

Passengers traveling with the Australian airline Jetstar were forewarned by a rogue cabin crew member that they should get rid of any illegal substances they had.

During the flight from Byron Bay to Sydney, he reportedly announced: ‘We have been told there are sniffer dogs and quarantine officers waiting in the domestic terminal.

‘If you need to dispose of anything you shouldn’t have we suggest you flush it now.’

The announcement was apparently followed by a rush of passengers heading towards the toilets.

It is believed the message was delivered as many people on the flight were were returning from the Splendor In The Grass festival.

One passenger told the Daily Telegraph they were ‘shocked’ by the crew member’s warning, saying: ‘If they have got something illegal, let them get caught.’

Jetstar confirmed that the announcement had been made in place of the usual pre-recorded message about Australian quarantine rules by an ‘over-zealous, casual employee’.

A spokesperson said: ‘The crew member’s words were poorly chosen and are plainly at odds with the professional standards we’d expect from our team.

‘We’re addressing the matter with the cabin crew member involved.’
