When you’re heading off to protect world leaders at a Nato summit where thousands of protesters are predicted to turn up, you expect to be thoroughly briefed in advance.

But police were left bemused when – rather than advice on controlling crowds or spotting threats – they were given tips on getting their rest at next month’s gathering in Newport, south Wales.

‘To make sure you sleep well you may want to consider bringing a suitable pillow,’ says guidance issued by the Police Federation.

‘Whilst pillows are available at all accommodation sites, quality and numbers are varied.’

Other advice includes bringing toiletries in case there are no shops nearby – and packing books and personal stereos for entertainment during downtime.

One Met officer said: ‘My son is 14 and he gets this kind of thing from school when they go on school trips.

‘I appreciate the Federation thinking of our comfort – but I’m sure they have decent enough pillows in Wales.’

The guidance also includes a list of Welsh words and phrases… but officers who follow the advice won’t need to ask for an extra clustogau when they arrive at their digs.
