It’s hard to believe that the Independent is now in its sixth year. It feels like just yesterday that it opened up for the first time (in 2010) at the old Dia Art Foundation building in Manhattan’s West Chelsea gallery district, offering a modestly scaled alternative to the Armory Show for venturesome-minded contemporary art galleries. This year’s edition sports 50 exhibitors, including newcomers like JTT (New York), Kurimanzutto (Mexico City), and Catherine Bastide (Brussels). In the slide show below, a look at work that some of those first-time participants are bringing, including a sculpture from 1997 by the great Jimmie Durham, which will be at Kurimanzutto’s booth. You can see it in person from March 5 to 8.
