Ruckus offers simplified WiFi services for SMBs

Ruckus looks to boost SMB WiFi use

Ruckus Wireless has launched a new WiFi service for SMBs designed to reduce the cost and complexity of rolling out enterprise-grade access points.

The offering, dubbed Unleashed by Ruckus, does not require any controller software, reducing the need for software licences to cut costs, with access points instead installed and managed via a free web-based console.

The access points being offered as part of the Unleashed portfolio range are two existing products that were originally designed for medium to larger enterprises: the ZoneFlexM R500 and ZoneFlex R600 priced at $645 and $795 respectively.

This is the only cost a customer incurs, rather than ongoing software licences, which Dan Rabinovitsj, Ruckus’ chief operating officer, said is a major benefit for SMBs.

“Ruckus Unleashed access points level the playing field for local retailers, coffee shops and restaurants, helping to deliver a high-quality WiFi experience for customers and employees with much lower total cost of ownership,” he said.

“We’re excited to help small business owners make high-performance WiFi affordable and simple to install and maintain.”

The access points can handle up to 512 simultaneous connections, which should be more than enough for any SMB, while the web-based console offers standard features such as password management and device monitoring.

Pricing for the service will be dictated by Ruckus’ channel partners.

Nolan Greene, IDC research analyst for network infrastructure, explained that offering WiFi is now vital for smaller firms in areas like hospitality and retail.

“WiFi connectivity has become an absolute requirement for customers and employees of small businesses, but business owners are often challenged to provide reliable, business-grade networks within a limited budget,” she said.

“A solution like Ruckus Unleashed access points can provide accessible enterprise-grade functionality to small and medium businesses.”
