Samsung has unveiled a miniature version of its Galaxy S5 flagship, the Galaxy S5 Mini, claiming the smaller Android handset will offer similar top-end performance and security services to its larger sibling.

The 131x65x9.1mm Galaxy S5 Mini has the same design as the full-sized Galaxy S5 and is also IP67 certified, meaning it is dust and water resistant.

Samsung’s UK marketing director Ines van Gennip said the firm expects the Galaxy S5 Mini’s small form factor to prove a hit in the UK, despite recent data from Kantar Worldpanel suggesting the full-sized Galaxy S5 has struggled to match the iPhone.

“As with our previous Mini devices, this latest incarnation combines the iconic design and essential features of the Galaxy S5 with a sleek and compact body,” she said. “A larger screen might not work for everyone, so the Galaxy S5 mini is great for anyone after a smartphone that they can more easily slip into their pocket or bag.”

The Galaxy S5 features slightly downgraded internal specifications compared with its full-sized sibling. It will be powered by an unspecified quad-core 1.4GHz processor and has a downgraded 1.5GM RAM. The Galaxy S5 by comparison has a quad-core 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and 2GB of RAM.

The Galaxy S5 Mini will also feature a 4.5in 1280×720 Super Amoled display, 8MP rear camera and 4G connectivity.

The specifications put the Galaxy S5 Mini in direct competition with the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, which until now was the only other miniature smartphone to feature similarly top-end internal specifications.

The Galaxy S5 Mini will first be released in Russia in early July. Samsung said it will announce UK availability and pricing “in due course”. Check back with V3 later this year for a full review of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini.
