Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab S devices with octa-core processors to rival iPad Air

Samsung has unveiled its latest range of Galaxy Tab S Android tablets, hoping the devices’ top-end components and ultra thin design will entice buyers away from Apple’s iPad Air.

Samsung unveiled 8.4in and 10.5in Galaxy Tab S devices in New York, claiming their wealth of features and software services makes them the best business tablets currently available.

The Korean firm listed the 10.5in tablets 2560×1600 resolution Super Amoled display as a key selling point, claiming the “industry leading” screen has a 100,000:1 contrast ratio. The ratio will let the Galaxy Tab S display deeper blacks and brighter whites than rival tablets, the firm said.

Samsung designed the tablets to be as thin as possible with both the 8.4in and 10.5in models measuring in at just 6.6mm thick. This makes the Galaxy Tab S thinner than the 7.5mm thick iPad Air.

The 10.5in and 8.4in Galaxy S will be powered by Samsung’s own octa-core Exynos 5 processor and feature 3GB of RAM, making them on paper two of the fastest tablets on the market.Samsung Galaxy Tab S with Android 4.4

Both versions of the Galaxy Tab S will be available with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, dual 8MP and 2MP cameras, Bluetooth 4.0 and optional 4G connectivity. The 8.4in model will be powered by a 4,900mAh battery, while the larger 10.5in version will run off a 7,900mAh battery.

On the software side, both will run using a heavily customised version of Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat mobile operating system. Galaxy Tab S features a number of custom software features including multi-window support and multitasking.

Both models also feature Papergarden and Kindle for Samsung applications. Papergarden is custom app designed for viewing digital content, while Kindle for Samsung lets Galaxy Tab S users download a free book each month.

Samsung has also loaded the Galaxy Tab S with a number of custom features designed to boost its business appeal. These include a built-in fingerprint scanner – like the one seen on the Galaxy S5 – and a new software service that lets users answer incoming calls to their phone on the tablet.

Both versions of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S will be available from July. The 8.4in model will be priced from $399 and the 10.5in model from $499. Samsung has not confirmed the Galaxy Tab S UK pricing and at the time of publishing had not responded to V3‘s request for comment.
