One has gained a reputation as a brash millionaires’ playground, the other for its… understated glamour.

But sun-drenched Dubai and regularly drenched Sandbanks may not be worlds apart if ambitious property plans get the green light.

A holiday complex proposed for the Dorset shoreline is similar to the man-made Palm Jumeira archipelago in the United Arab Emirates.

It would feature a hotel shaped like a seagull, a 33-storey sports tower, a marina, shopping mall and a helipad.

The plans, which also incorporate a vital coastal-defence system, have been drawn up by developer and former Bournemouth AFC chairman Eddie Mitchell, 54.

He said: ‘It’s more than just a dream – I have invested a lot of time and money already and it’s something I’m very keen to see happen.’

Poole Borough Council said it could not comment on the scheme until it received a planning application.
