Skype unveils major iPhone app overhaul but disappears from iTunes store

Skype 5.0 for iPhone delivers notifications syncing and new UI

Skype has announced what it claims is the “biggest change” yet to its iPhone app with version 5.0 set to arrive next week offering a faster and smoother experience, the firm said.

Currently the app is not available from the iTunes store to download, though, and it is not clear if this is related to the unveiling of the new app. V3 contacted Skype for comment on this but had received no reply at the time of publication.

Explaining more about the design and feature overhaul on a blog post, the Skype team said the new app brought a more familiar iOS look and feel and a range of new features.

These include dynamic notifications so if a message is read on one device the iPhone app will recognise this and not display huge numbers of “unread” messages.

“We know our users are using Skype on multiple devices, and we want to make sure your Skype notifications keep pace with your conversations, no matter where they happen,” the firm said.

“Now, as you read your messages on your PC, tablet, Xbox and so on, those conversations will be marked as read on your iPhone too.”

Skype also said the new 5.0 version of the app is five times faster than previously and is smoother too.

“As you swipe from conversations through to your favourites and then back to your contacts lists, you’ll notice how smooth scrolling and transitioning from screen to screen is – with delightful little pops and animations punctuating them,” it said.

“All without degrading the performance and battery improvements we worked so hard to achieve.”

Skype said the new version would be available globally in about a week while a new iPad version is also in the works.
