Special grey PS4 revealed for PlayStation’s 20th anniversary (Wired UK)

Today is the PlayStation‘s twentieth
birthday. Officially an adult in its native Japan, it can legally
smoke and drink, if it had the necessary biological parts to
poison. It doesn’t, but 20 years in the market is an impressive
milestone for any console family. To celebrate, the company is
releasing a collector’s model of the PS4,
dressed in the fetching garb of the original PlayStation.

The PlayStation 4 Anniversary Edition is billed as being
“original grey” but also has some silver hues, and comes detailed
with the multicoloured ‘PS’ logo that graced the first generation
consoles. The PS4’s casing is embossed with a tiny recurring
pattern of the triangle, square, cross and circle face buttons,
with the latter swapped for a ‘2O’ to mark the occasion. The
package is limited to 12,300 units worldwide, and comes with a
matching PS Camera, Dual Shock 4 — also bearing classic branding
and the console’s patterning on its touchpad — and vertical stand.
It’s all packed into a fetching commemorative box, and frankly
looks sexy enough to justify buying a second PS4.

The number of units being produced is in reference to the first
PlayStation’s Japanese release date of 3 December 1994 — we
wouldn’t get it in the UK until September 1995, but a 19th
anniversary isn’t quite as catchy. The console helped revolutionise
the games industry, targeting an older audience than its
predecessors and introducing 3D gaming worlds to the living room.
It also pushed nascent multimedia capabilities, and although the
PS1 could only play CDs, it set the stage for the PS2 to add DVD compatibility, and Blu-ray and
streaming video to PS3 and PS4.

“The PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition is a very special
model. This limited edition PS4 offers a great sense of nostalgia
to long-time PlayStation fans, while also providing a fresh
experience to those who never picked up the original console,”
Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer
Entertainment, said via statement. “The ‘PlayStation®4 20th
Anniversary Edition’ embodies our appreciation and gratitude to all
our fans, publishers, and business partners that have provided us
with tremendous support for the past 20 years, and we look forward
to their support as we continue to imagine and build the future of
PlayStation together for years to come.  We remain steadfast
in our commitment to deliver the best gaming experiences and to
offer the best place to play for gamers around the world.”

The Anniversary Edition PS4 will retail in the UK for £399.
Expect more announcements from Sony as the PlayStation anniversary
celebrations continue.
