A teacher has banned the use of the word ‘banter’ from his classroom in an attempt to tackle bullying.

Mike Stuchbery, who teaches English at a school in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, compared the term to a ‘Get Out of Jail Free Card’ that bullies employ to legitimise bullying pupils.

And in a post on his blog, the teacher and writer announced that he was banning use of the word ‘banter’ from his classroom, claiming it ‘masks appalling behaviour’.

‘If I catch somebody nicking someone’s pencilcase, calling another student a derogatory name or thumping them on the back, nine times out of ten I’ll be met with a “Siiiiir, it’s just bantaaaaaaaah!”,’ he writes.

‘Banter is also loathsome because it shifts the blame in any situation to the victim. It is classic victim blaming.

‘”It’s just banter” makes it seem as if the problem rests with with the person who has suffered the insult.’

Mr Stuchbery also attacked those who tried to portray ‘banter’ as a ‘noble, British tradition’ and promised that from now on he would demand students explain their behaviour.

‘I’m going to look my students dead in the eye and ask them point blank – “Why’d you do it?”, “Why’d you steal his or her pencil case?”, “Why’d you thump her?”,’ he said.
