A teenager was rescued at sea after posting an SOS on Facebook because his phone was too wet to make an emergency call.

The 18-year-old man, who has not been named, alerted his friends and family after his Laser sailing craft capsized off Mevagissey in Cornwall on Thursday night.

After seeing the post the man’s mother raised the alarm and the Brixham Coastguard was called in.

‘This young man was extremely lucky to be found when he was,’ said the coastguard’s watch manager Andy Huber.

‘He told lifeboat crews he had been in the water for two hours and was trying to swim back to shore, even though he did not have a buoyancy aid or lifejacket on.’

Mr Huber advised those heading out on the water to carry a VHF radio, a charged mobile phone in a waterproof bag, distress flares and an emergency beacon.
