A new wristband that monitors the wearer’s body will pause and record whatever you watch on TV if you happen to fall asleep.

The 3D-printed band, which was produced by Virgin Media, uses a pulse-oximeter that measures the amount of oxygen in the blood to check whether the owner is awake or not.

And the wristband will pause the Virgin Media TiVo box and start recording the programme if the wearer happens to doze off, only resuming the show if it senses the wearer has woken up.

The company also says the technology could be used to monitor the emotional reaction of viewers to shows, helping ‘TiVo learn and tag programmes that evoke the strongest responses from the wearer’.

According to research done by Virgin Media, 18 percent of people expect to fall asleep on the sofa during Christmas Day and the company hopes its creation will stop people missing any good television as a result.

Virgin Media also believe the same technology could be applied to other appliances like heating.

The wristband will be trialled this Christmas.
