This is what Lord of the Ring’s Gandalf would have looked like as a young man

A picture has emerged of Sir Ian McKellen when he was a young man.

The image, which is trending on site today, has got us thinking – is this what Gandalf would have looked like when he was younger?

Perhaps he would have had a beard, but then how would he be Gandalf the Grey?

His hat would obviously look a bit newer, and maybe his cloak. And when did the good wizard get his fantastical staff?

So many questions.

Turns out the image of Sir Ian McKellen was taken in 1976 by Nobby Clark when he was first starting out in the world of acting. Here are a few more:

This one shows him in a classic Gandalf pose, showing he was destined for the part.

But take a look at this picture, it was taken in the 1960s so we’re guessing Sir Ian is only in his late teens or early twenties. Again, he shows a classic Gandalf pose. Totally kick ass.

This does raise an important prospect: wouldn’t it be great if there was a whole new Lord of the Rings book/film about Gandalf growing up?

Now there’s an idea.
