Tim Vine has made a clean sweep of the Edinburgh Fringe after his one-liner about a Hoover was voted the best wisecrack of this year’s event.

The 47-year-old became the first comedian to scoop the giggle gong for a second time, receiving almost a fifth of a public vote organised by witty banter TV channel Dave.

His winning effort was: ‘I decided to sell my Hoover… well it was just collecting dust.’

After claiming the comedy crown in 2010 with the joke ‘I’ve just been on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I’ll tell you what, never again’, Vine was runner-up for the next three years.

After his latest victory, he said: ‘I’m a little bit surprised but very delighted. This is the second time I’ve won this award but I guess nobody loves a repeat more than Dave.’

Steve North, general manager of Dave, added: ‘Tim has once again proved he is king of the one-liners.’

Three women made it into the top ten this year – Bec Hill, Ria Lina and Felicity Ward.
