If you are looking for a nice bottle of vino to take to a dinner party (or let’s face it – just get p****d on) you could do worse than shopping at Aldi.

The discount retailer might not be the first place you think of for top notch ‘plonk’.

However its £6.99 own-label The Exquisite Collection Clare Valley Riesling bottle was given the award for best value bottle at the International Wine Challenge.

Panel judges included some of the most experienced wine connoisseurs in the world.

It’s not the first time experts have found hidden gems on the bargain retailer’s shelves.

In 2010 the supermarket sold out of its £3.49 Anti Aging serum after it was hailed as ‘miracle product’ by scientists on the BBC’s Horizon programme who found it worked better than its rivals.

Tony Baines, Managing Director for Corporate Buying, said: ‘We are delighted to have received a Great Value Champion award.

‘It reinforces our core principles of offering our customers great tasting, world class wines at affordable prices, and making the exciting world of wine accessible to all.’

Aldi snatched the coveted title of ‘Multiple Wine Retailer of the Year’ from upmarket retailer Waitrose in February 2015.
