A young man has walked free from court, albeit with community service and fines, after pushing a ticket inspector off a train and sitting on her after trying to board a train without a ticket.

The court was told that Matthew Tisdale, 21, jumped onto a carriage at Welshpool train station in Powys and, when approached for his fare by Louise Caisley, said he was staying on ‘no matter what’.

According to testimony, he then shoved Ms Caisley onto the platform and spat on her, before locking the doors and signalling to the driver to head off.

Upon realising something was wrong, the driver ejected Tisdale before calling the police.

Tisdale admitted charges of endangering the safety of people on a railway, assault by beating and interfering with automatic doors on a railway.

He has been ordered to do 250 hours of unpaid work and pay £195 in costs and compensation.
