VMware to acquire Boxer to round out mobile portfolio

Boxer provides email, calendar and contacts apps for mobile

BARCELONA: VMware is set to acquire software developer Boxer for its mobile-optimised personal information management tool to round out the firm’s end-user computing portfolio.

Announced at the VMworld Europe conference by Sanjay Poonen, VMware’s general manager for end-user computing, the move will see the Boxer team join that of AirWatch, the enterprise mobility specialist that VMware acquired in 2014.

Financial details of the acquisition, which has yet to close, have not been disclosed. The move also comes in the week that VMware parent company EMC announced that it is being acquired by Dell.

The Boxer suite is described as a mature personal information management solution for enterprises that offers a container approach to mobile application management and security.

It comprises an integrated suite of mobile email, calendar and contacts apps that work together to help users to be more productive on the go, and is currently available for iOS and Android mobile devices.

“The combination of Boxer and AirWatch by VMware will create a world-class suite of services that will enable businesses to provide employees with secure access to their email, content and apps,” said VMware’s vice president of product management for end-user computing, Noah Wasmer.

The team at Boxer understands that enterprise IT has to earn the right to be on the user’s device by creating a “consumer grade” user experience that is precise and blazing fast, Wasmer said, and has carried those attributes over to its enterprise solution.

Boxer will continue development of its consumer-grade version, which will continue to be available from Apple’s iTunes app store and the Google Play app store.

As well as Microsoft’s Exchange, Boxer supports Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Apple’s iCloud.

“Boxer is an incredible infusion of team, technology and vision that will be merging with our existing people and solutions at AirWatch on closing to create something spectacular in 2016, and we can’t wait to show you what’s next,” Wasmer said.
