White House Press Secretary Jay Carney is leaving the White House, President Barack Obama says, to be replaced by his deputy, Josh Earnest.
“To be part of it is an honour and a joy for me,” Mr Carney, whose planned departure had been rumoured, said as he bowed out.
Mr Obama, who made the announcement during a surprise appearance in the briefing room, said of the podium veteran: “I’m going to miss him a lot.”
Mr Carney, a former journalist at the Miami Herald, Time magazine and CNN, became White House press secretary in February 2011.
