It’s official: three is a crowd.
A man has been fined $113 (£67) for walking side-by-side with his friends.
The bizarre law of ‘no more than two abreast’ was enforced – to the man’s surprise – in Winnipeg, Canada.
It usually only applies to those on walking in the road, but the ticketed man’s friend insists he was on the pavement at the time.
Chris Herda, a friend of the man ticketed, told CTV Winnipeg: ‘I’ve walked passed people four or five abreast.
‘I personally didn’t know it was a law. I don’t think anyone else knew it was a law either.’
He uploaded a photo of the ticket to Facebook in an angry protest.
A ticket was issued under section 143(2) of Manitoba’s Highway Act which states: ‘Any pedestrian proceeding along a highway where no sidewalk is provided, or where the sidewalk is not passable, shall walk as closely as is practicable … but persons walking on a roadway shall not walk more than two abreast.’
